This was the first book I actually made, book 0 was a later-drawn prequel. A few of the "Next Part" things at the end of the pages say things like "Next Issue" or "Next Week", as I still wasn't sure what I was going to "do" with this story (nothing much, it turned out!). When I showed it to my brother he said it was the best comic he'd ever read. To be fair, he hadn't read many comics.

The story begins with Gunn flying a reconnisance mission over the ocean in a helicopter (his actual role in the military seems to change a lot - I assumed any soldier could randomly jump into a helicopter and fly it), he helpfully reports "nothing here", while flying over open ocean. Meanwhile, he is being watched by hidden cameras, one of the monitors reports "Life forms: 1". Proper Star Trek tech, there. Some anti-aircraft missiles are fired from hidden launchers, just under the water, and blast Gunn out of the sky. The missiles are like triangular wedges with wings. I used this design a lot in early stories, I suppose it's meant to be "futuristic"

A fake volcanic island, complete with its own beach, then raises itself up out of the sea! A page in and we're already in Bond territory. A jet plane is launched, despite there being no runway, and searches for survivors. The pilot appears to be just looking around with the mk1 eyeball. I guess the plane doesn't have a "life form" scanner.

Gunn emerges from the waves (it first shows a close-up of his Gun, as if that's the real star, he is just the guy who uses it). He fires a burst at the approaching enemy plane (apparently without even looking at it), and manages to hit something vital. It loses control and flies towards the cliff face (the pilot rather optimistically putting the landing gear down), but luckily crashes into a tunnel which gives access to the base, and doesn't explode! The pilot smashes his way out of the jammed canopy, reporting that Gunn is still alive.

Later, a small train with a crane on it is in the tunnel, picking up bits of jet from the track. The crane operator muttering "It was amazing he survived" to himself. Suddenly the gun appears next to his head, with the amazing sound effect "crick a lick". My brother was re-reading this with me at one point, and that really cracked us up. We used it as a stupid in-joke for years. Loads of blood splashes onto the wall of the tunnel, along with the crane operator's hat. Gunn drives the little train deeper into the enemy base...

Gunn finds a chemical weapons lab, and blows the door off, before spraying bullets round the room on full-auto, causing all kinds of expensive damage (and a few deaths). He leaves, and "Genetic Regeration Project 870", a giant spider, climbs out of a broken glass tank. It climbs onto a dead scientist, and turns him into a 'zombie'... with glowing yellow eyes and giant claws, which can talk! The zombie goes on a rampage of it's own, ripping out somebody's guts, while Gunn shoots somebody in another room (who says the first ever 'Urg' in the history of the comic). The zombie attacks Gunn, so he blasts it on full-auto, it gets back up and goes "Is that your best shot?". Gunn sets it on fire using the "Makimum" flamethrower setting. The spider escapes the burning body it had been controlling, and presumably also gets shot... or it would just turn somebody else into a zombie.

Gunn finds the base Command Centre, and is about to blow down the door, when a bloke with a chainsaw comes along going "Get ready to die!" The chainsaw has a little flag and a telescopic sight on it. He gets blown away. Gunn then blasts open the command centre door and sprays the room with bullets. A button to self-destruct the base is on a console in plain sight, so Gunn pushes it.

While the timer is counting down, Gunn storms the "captured enemy vehicles bay" and gets another Wolf Force helicopter. This odd contrivance was my assumption that everyone else is stupid coming out, if I had him escape in a Stealth Force vehicle, some kid reading it would doubtless later ask "why are the same side shooting each other?". This assumption was often proven depressingly correct at the schools I went to!

Gunn flies away as the island explodes (I think the explosion was the first time I ever did a "splash page" in a comic). A jet plane attacks him, so he fires a small High-Velocity Rocket at it, which the pilot easily dodges. Then they blast at each other with 'scatter machine guns'. This was a weapon I came up with while riding up and down the street, trying to shoot mosquitoes with water pistols. I was imagining the little water drops that went all over the place were "scatter" bullets. This was the origin of what became The Gun. One of Gunn's bullets goes into the jet's air intake and it explodes. Then Gunn returns to a Wolf Force aircraft carrier, the end!

Extra: A description of the gun, which explains the various parts. The machine gun part apparently has an 'easy trigger', just the thing for accidental friendly fire. It fires "Marinestar 13mm cased" bullets. I'd seen, either on TV, or some tech profile page in 2000AD, "caseless" bullets mentioned. I had to specify cased rounds, in order to have the badass image of casings flying everywhere when Gunn is firing on full-auto. The 'emitter' on the flamethrower is fireproof, now there's a good idea! The fuel tank is a tiny container of 'camping gaz' the size of those little ones you put on camping lanterns or jet boilers. I'm not sure that would last long in a battle. Its second setting, and the one most often used, is the 'fireball' setting, which somehow shoots little 'mini molotovs' that fly along and explode. This was inspired by the guns in the Super Mario Bros movie... that great gem of cinema. The Gun overall was inspired by the weapon in another great work of film... Robocop 3! Though there's also elements of Judge Dredd, The Fifth Element and a toy gun sold under various names, including "Johnny Seven", made famous(ish) by Stiff Little Fingers.
