Mary Cartwright was a mill girl in the city of Middleford. In the early 60's, a bunch of the mill workers formed a scratch women's football league between the "sheds" where the machines are. They were told to stop by the boss, because "women shouldn't play football". They decided to hold the matches on some waste ground at the weekend instead. At the same time (earlier than in real life), a Women's FA Cup was starting up, and a talent scout from the local team, Middleford United, asked Mary to sign for their new women's side. |

I wanted to do a fitba' story for The Red, White & Blue, but I was also in an anal "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" mood and wanted it to at least nominally tie in with other famous football strips. But as other teams in other comics won the FA Cup in the 60's (to say nothing of real life), I couldn't have "my" team do it. Then I had a flash of inspiration - make it about women's fitba' instead! |
