General Info:

Will Carlin was born in India to working-class, white parents, who worked on the railways under the Raj. They moved around a lot, and he went to mission schools in India, rather than to a public school, back in England. He came to consider himself Indian, rather than British.

When the war started, Will was technically eligible for conscription into the British army, but avoided it by joining the Indian army. He joined as a "ranker", but was quickly bumped up to sergeant. This was mainly because the officers didn't want a white man to be given orders by an Indian sergeant. Fortunately, Will was a good leader, and came through the campaigns in Eritrea and Burma with many medals.

After the war, India soon became independent. Will was going to be "sent back where he came from", to a country he'd never seen. He was transferred to the British army, and put on peace-keeping duties during and after the handover of power. Shocked by the violence along the border of Pakistan, Will deserted and rounded up some of his old friends, starting a vigilante group called the Tigers of Punjab.

Character Origin:

I wanted a main character for the Tigers who was not on either "side" of the Punjab conflict. So it had to be one of India's former rulers! But he was one of those "rulers" only by virtue of his colour, anyway.

Little Known Fact:

I wish I'd never started Tigers of Punjab, as it's crap.
